Virtual Care Within the EHR May Be a ‘Game-Changer’

The video visit may meet the patient’s desire for quick healthcare, but it’s often a nightmare for health systems trying to marry the service to their EHR platform. If the platform requires extra technology or doesn’t mesh with the medical records (or the doctor’s or clinic’s practice management software), it affects the clinician’s workflow.

Our take

Virtual Value Requires Interoperability

Patients are finding value in virtual visits; it’s a trend that’s likely to continue. Providers, though, are finding themselves challenged to reliably incorporate virtual visits into their current workflows in ways that allow for accurate data capture and complete patient records. Virtual care holds promise, but only if the data generated from the virtual visit can be captured and stored within the patient health record. Can virtual care data live within your EHR?

To avoid having virtual visits become a good idea that falls by the wayside, healthcare administrators and their IT staff members and vendors need to ensure that the outcomes of these visits can be seamlessly captured and contained in the patient record through the EHR. The ability to tie all patient data together, regardless of the care setting, is critical.
