Making healthcare bills easier to understand

A major hindrance to those efforts has been the challenge of interoperability, as EHR systems and other health IT applications have been limited in their impact because the data they collect or produce is walled off in siloes, owing either to technical incompatibilities or the policies of the vendors.

Why are medical bills so hard to understand? It’s a question that patients have been asking for years and now HHS has made a move to help answer the question. HHS is hoping developers will rise to the “A Bill You Can Understand Challenge.” Are you ready to rise to the challenge?

There are many barriers to producing bills that “a normal human being can understand” as Department of Health and Human Services secretary Sylvia Burwell has challenged, but there is no doubt that patients have long been frustrated by notoriously difficult to understand bills. Healthcare is not the only industry facing these challenges, of course—utility companies also have long drawn criticism from consumers over their seemingly indecipherable billing statements. As with much in the healthcare industry these days, the solution here is driven to a large degree by interoperability—or the lack thereof. Time will tell whether this, and other challenges, can be addressed to improve the patient experience.
